The 9th presentation of the extremely popular UCT (Law@Work) Sectional Title Scheme Management Certificate Course is due to start on the 30th of November 2009. We have asked three of our past students to share some of their experience of the course with our Paddocks Press readers. The 6-month part-time course is presented via distance learning over the Internet with a one-day workshop help in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.

Andrew Alt, Auditor
Andrew completed the course in November 2008

Q1: How long you have been involved in the sectional title industry?
I have been involved for 5 years as an auditor of the Financial statements of Sectional Title Schemes and more recently in assisting with the management of a local scheme.

Q2: What was your motivation for registering for the course?
When auditing in any environment a keen understanding of the legislative environment is crucial to properly perform your assignment.

Q3:  How has this course helped you in your profession?
In has assisted in placing the Financial Statements in a broader context of the required legislation, allowing me to add more value to my audit clients and provided a better understanding of the environment for the management clients.

Q4: How did you find the online component of the course?
I found the online section of the course comprehensive and clear. It was particularly useful to be able to study at my own pace within the broader time-frame of the course. The study material and additional material were comprehensive and the site really user friendly.
 
Q5: What was the most beneficial part of the course? 
I found the way in which the examples were drawn from real world situations most beneficial as it made the material come alive and placed the theory in a practical context.

Patricia completed the course in June 2009

Q1: How long you have been involved in the sectional title industry?
Fourteen years.

Q2: What was your motivation for registering for the course?
As Sectional Title has changed so much over the years, I felt a need to gain more knowledge to help me have a more hands on approach to my job as a Sectional Title Portfolio Manager. Our company has now made it a stipulation that all new Sectional Title Portfolio Manager’s register for the course as well as all current Sectional Title staff.

 Q3:  How has this course helped you in your profession?
 I now feel more confident in the answers that I am supplying to my clients and it has definitely broadened my knowledge of Sectional Title.

Q4: How did you find the online component of the course?
I feel it is a great way to study. Especially the fact that we can e-mail other students to enquire what their feelings are on questions. I also thought the on-line quizzes were a good way of testing ones knowledge as the new modules were introduced.
  
Q5: What was the most beneficial part of the course?  

I felt the assignments were the most beneficial as it made one apply the knowledge gained from the modules together with our real life situations in the management of our own complexes.

Tewie Willemse, Attorney
Tewie completed the course in November 2008

Q1: What was your motivation for registering for the course?
To be in a better position to assist Bodies Corporate and their Managing Agents with legal matters and to have a better understanding of the Sectional Titles Act, Management and Conduct Rules.

Q2: How has this course helped you in your profession?

I have much more confidence in myself and know that I am in a position to provide informed legal advice.

Q3:  How did you find the online component of the course?
Although I am not a “computer whiz”, I found the online component easy accessible and user friendly.

Q4: What was the most beneficial part of the course? 
I have enjoyed the entire course. It will be difficult to favor a particular module over the other.
